Master of Architecture design thesis:

2009

Based on an international design competition the Pan African Parliament thesis is based on the concept of the village and fractals. The offices of the parliamentarians are distributed across a plaza, each one pointing in the direction of the capital city of the country represented as a physical reminder of why the parliamentarians are there. Each of the parliamentary pods is located in a way that does not disrupt the line of sight across the savanna for each pod. Because the pods are located on the grand plaza, the public can visit their parliamentarian offices.

The location selected by the Pan African Parliament is odd in its geographical and historical context, South Africa being the Southern most African country and also one of the last to become independent. As such it was important to remove people from context, which has been done by providing access to the Parliamentary complex only through underground rail.
